You have the experience. The job description sounds relevant. But your software engineer resume still reads like a list of tools: React, TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, AWS. What should you change before applying?
Start with a requirement, connect it to work you actually did, and explain the outcome. Resume keywords help name that connection. Your examples give it substance.
This guide walks through a fictional backend engineering application. Use the process for frontend, full-stack, platform, or early-career roles, replacing every example with your own experience. The diagrams are learning aids for this article; keep the submitted resume itself simple and text-based.
Extract the right job description keywords
Read the responsibilities before copying the technology list. A job description may mention Python, SQL, AWS, and Kubernetes, but it also tells you what the team needs someone to accomplish: maintain APIs, diagnose slow queries, or operate production services.
Sort the requirements into three groups. This is a practical editing framework, not a formula used by every applicant tracking system.
01 / Find the signal in the job description
CORE REQUIREMENT
Python + PostgreSQL
Show relevant API and database work first.
WORK TO DELIVER
Reliable backend services
Explain implementation, testing, or operational responsibilities.
PREFERRED EXTRA
AWS experience
Include real experience; do not invent it to fill a gap.
For a fictional posting that says “Build Python APIs, optimize PostgreSQL queries, and collaborate with product; AWS experience preferred,” Python and PostgreSQL deserve attention first. AWS is still useful if you have relevant experience, but it should not displace a strong example of database work.
- Technical keywords: Languages, frameworks, databases, cloud services, and testing tools you have actually used.
- Responsibility keywords: API development, query optimization, incident response, accessibility, or automated testing.
- Scope keywords: Ownership, mentoring, stakeholder collaboration, or cross-team design—only when your work supports them.
Preserve accurate names. TypeScript is clearer than “TS.” If the posting uses Amazon Web Services, you can write “Amazon Web Services (AWS)” once. Do not add adjacent skills just because a tool is commonly used with them.
Map each resume keyword to evidence
Create a small evidence map before editing your resume. For each important requirement, find a project, role, or contribution that demonstrates it. Record where the evidence belongs and what you can explain in an interview.
02 / Connect the keyword to something you did
JOB REQUIREMENT
SQL optimization
The posting asks for efficient database queries.
YOUR EVIDENCE
Investigated a slow endpoint
Reviewed query plans and added a targeted index.
RESUME PLACEMENT
Experience → relevant role
Explain the change and its verified outcome in a bullet.
If you cannot find evidence, mark the requirement as a gap. A tutorial is not production experience; a personal project can still demonstrate a useful skill when clearly labeled. For an early-career application, coursework, internships, and open-source contributions can supply concrete examples without implying employment experience.
A useful self-check is: “Could I describe the problem, my contribution, and one decision I made?” If the answer is no, reconsider the claim before putting it on your resume.
Use keywords naturally across the resume. Keep a compact skills section for quick scanning, then connect the most relevant tools to experience or project bullets. You do not need to repeat the same term in every section.
Write software engineer resume bullets that explain impact
Use this editing pattern: action + technical context + outcome. The outcome can be a measured result, a delivered capability, or a clearly described improvement. A number is useful only if you can substantiate it.
03 / Make the contribution visible
BEFORE • VAGUE
Worked with Python APIs
Names the technology but leaves the contribution unclear.
AFTER • SPECIFIC
Built a Python order-status API
Added input validation and error responses so support staff could retrieve order details without database access.
The stronger example explains what changed and why it mattered. It does not need inflated verbs or a fabricated percentage. If you do have measurements, include enough context to make them meaningful: what was measured, under what conditions, and how your work contributed.
Here are two more illustrative rewrites:
| Focus | Vague bullet | More informative bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Frontend development | Worked on React screens | Built a React and TypeScript checkout form with field validation and keyboard-accessible error messages. |
| Automated testing | Responsible for tests | Added integration tests for payment retries and duplicate webhook delivery to verify failure handling before release. |
These examples describe fictional work. Copy the structure, not the accomplishments. If you contributed to a team result, distinguish your contribution from the team's overall achievement.

Check your ATS resume format
An applicant tracking system (ATS) can parse a resume into candidate fields. Parsing, searching, screening, and a hiring decision are different activities. A successfully parsed document is not a guarantee of an interview, and a resume tool's match score is not an employer's decision.
Greenhouse documents parsing problems associated with complex formatting, including columns, tables, headers, footers, and graphics. Its documentation is a useful reason to check how your information is extracted; it does not establish one universal scoring system. Read Greenhouse's resume parsing guidance.
- Use clear section headings such as Experience, Projects, Skills, and Education.
- Keep your name and contact details in the main document body.
- Prefer a straightforward reading order and selectable text.
- Follow the employer's requested file format and upload limits.
- Review any fields the application portal fills from your resume and correct errors.
Copy the exported document into a plain-text editor as a quick reading-order check. Missing words or scrambled sections are reasons to inspect the file. This check is useful, but it cannot reproduce every employer's parser.
Your resume tailoring checklist
Use this checklist with one real job description. Save a separate version for the role so later edits do not overwrite the resume you submitted.
04 / Five checks before you submit
RELEVANCE
Requirements identified
Separate essential work from preferred extras.
EVIDENCE
Claims supported
Connect key skills to a role or clearly labeled project.
CLARITY
Contribution explained
Describe the action, context, and outcome.
READABILITY
Export reviewed
Check text order and application autofill fields.
ACCURACY
Facts verified
Confirm dates, links, skill levels, and every metric.
Start with the two or three requirements most central to the work. Move the most relevant evidence higher within the appropriate section, remove distracting repetition, and proofread dates, links, and company names. Keep job titles and qualifications accurate.
Try it now: Choose one vague bullet on your resume. Underline the action, circle the technical context, and identify the outcome. If one part is missing, revise it using facts you can defend.

Frequently asked questions
How many resume keywords should I include?
There is no universal target count. Cover the role's relevant requirements where you have evidence. A concise, supported description is more useful to a reader than a long list of unrelated technologies.
Should I include skills I am still learning?
Describe the level and context accurately. A project using Docker can appear under Projects; completing a tutorial does not justify claiming responsibility for production container infrastructure.
Is PDF or DOCX better for an ATS resume?
Follow the application instructions first. For an accepted format, check selectable text, reading order, and extracted fields. File extension alone does not prove that the content will parse correctly.
What if I do not have measurable results?
Describe a concrete deliverable, the problem it addressed, and your contribution. “Added retry handling for failed webhook deliveries” is specific without an invented metric.
Can an AI resume checker tell me whether I will get an interview?
No. Treat its feedback as editing suggestions. Employer requirements, application answers, human review, and the applicant pool can all affect the outcome.
